The Duleep Trophy 2024 marks the commencement of India’s domestic red-ball cricket season, set to begin on September 5 in Anantapur (Andhra Pradesh) and Bengaluru. The Board of Indian Cricket has announced the squads, featuring some of the country’s top players and emerging talents. The tournament is structured to provide a platform for players to prove their mettle in the longer format of the game, with four teams representing different zones. Notably, the highest governing body of Indian cricket has decided to rest key players such as Rohit, Virat, R. Ashwin, and Bumrah. This decision aligns with a broader strategy similar to Australia’s, where top players often skip domestic competitions to avoid injuries and maintain their fitness for international commitments.
Duleep Trophy 2024: New Format
In previous editions, the Duleep Trophy followed a zonal format, where players were divided into six teams representing different zones of India. However, the BCCI has introduced a significant change for the 2024 edition. The zonal format has been replaced with a four-team structure, with the teams simply named A, B, C, and D.
Instead of knockout matches, this year’s tournament will adopt a round-robin format. Each team will play against the others, and the team that accumulates the most points by the end of these matches will be declared the champion. This new format emphasizes consistent performance throughout the tournament rather than relying on knockout stages to decide the winner.
